5 things we forget to do when moving home
Moving home is always an exciting time, but it can also be stressful. There are so many things to think about that it can become overwhelming. Hundreds of things to pack, all the right order and all whilst ensuring that nothing gets damaged! This is made even more complicated if you are moving a long way as you cannot just pop back if you’ve forgotten something, so every inch of the house must be covered. We all know that we should plan ahead with the packing, as having to move out of one home and into another on the same day is a mammoth task, but there are many things we forget to do that could actually make the move much easier. Here we will run through 5 of the things that most people forget to do when they move, but which could make the day go a whole lot easier.
Inform people of change of address
Most of us will put this to the back of our mind and only think about it once we are settled in, but this can be much too late. Make a list of important contacts, such as the bank, mobile phone supplier and doctors, and do this in advance to ensure no important letters are left unread at your old address. If letters from your bank are returned to sender then they will often cancel your cards.
Gather personal records together
Make sure that you keep all of your most precious documents in one place and remember where you put them! You may need things like passports, driver’s licenses and birth certificates for things like new schools and doctors. Make sure they don’t get stuffed at the bottom of a big box as you never know when you might need them.
Wrap up all of your precious items
This is something that you should really do yourself and not leave to the removal men, if you use them. You are the only one who knows which items are the most precious to you and which should be taken care of the most. Everybody knows things like your TV will be expensive, but it is the smaller breakables that you should be most wary of. Make sure to wrap them well.
Spare keys
Many people put the care of spare keys with their neighbours, and then move home without taking them with them! The people moving into your new home will want to have all the keys – just think how you would feel if you found out that a total stranger had had a key to your house for years!
Check energy prices
When moving to a new area you will inevitably have to change energy suppliers, or at least change accounts from the house you move into. It’s advised you compare electricity prices and gas prices in your new area to make sure that you get the right deal for you.
