In 2007, the government of Costa Rica announced plans for Costa Rica to become the first carbon neutral country by 2021. According to the New Economics Foundation, Costa Rica ranks first in the Happy Planet Index, and is one of the “greenest” countries in the world.
Costa Rica is located in the Central American isthmus, between latitudes 8 ° and 12 ° N Longitude 82 ° and 86 ° W. It is bordered by the Caribbean Sea (east) and the Pacific Ocean (west), with a total of 1290 km of coastline.
Costa Rica borders Nicaragua to the north (309 km or 192 miles from the border) and Panama to the south-southeast. All in all, Costa Rica is composed of 51 100 square kilometres, more than 589 miles square (227 square km) of territorial waters.
Because Costa Rica is between eight and 12 degrees north of Ecuador, the climate is tropical all year round. However, the country has many microclimates, depending on altitude, rainfall, topography and geography of each region in particular.
Seasons in Costa Rica are defined by the amount of rainfall in a given period and not the four seasons in the Northern Hemisphere. The year is divided into two periods, the dry season, known by locals as the summer and the rainy season, known locally as winter. Season “Summer” or dry extends from December to April and the season “winter” or rainy from May to November, which almost coincides with the hurricane season in the Atlantic, and during that time, it rains constantly in some areas.
